Acupuncture

After discussing how you feel and observing your body’s signals, your acupuncturist will stimulate points on the body’s meridian pathways, through which vital energy is thought to flow. The needles are so hair-thin and flexible that you’ll hardly feel them going in. When gently stimulated, the needles may produce a mild achy pressure, or an “electrical” sensation moving down the meridian pathways. You’ll then rest with the needles in place for 20-30 minutes. Feel free to squeeze in a nap! Most patients find acupuncture sensations deeply satisfying, and leave feeling relaxed and restored.

Don’t hesitate to bring any physical or mental health issue to your acupuncturist. This ancient science can alleviate pain, treat digestive and respiratory complaints, and help with everything from reproductive issues to anxiety and depression. Manual therapies including myofascial massage, Cupping, Gua Sha, or Tui Na are offered as optional add-ons to your treatment. Sanctuary Body also offers specialized acupuncture treatments for relief and recovery from sports injuries, as well as facial rejuvenation, addiction treatment, and Battlefield Acupuncture, which uses semi-permanent needles (3-5 days) to alleviate pain quickly with a prolonged effect.

The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative. Depending on your condition, may begin to feel relief after the first few treatments. Chronic conditions may take a bit longer to respond.

Massage

Your massage session will be customized for you and your body’s needs on that particular day. Your therapist may incorporate elements of orthopedic and sports massage, Swedish relaxation, reflexology, deep tissue massage, cranial sacral therapy, and myofascial release to achieve the optimum treatment for you. We don’t subscribe to a “more pain, more gain” philosophy when it comes to massage. Your therapist will apply just the right level of intensity to promote relaxation, pain relief, and increased mobility.

Massage has been shown to promote relief from chronic muscle tension, repetitive strain, and conditions such as osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. It can also help to speed recovery from exercise or injury, and reduce symptoms of stress and fatigue.

"[My trainer] said he would be happy to work with me, but only after I’d spent some time with his Rolfer. And so I was introduced to a remarkable guy who used Ida Rolf’s science, over several months, to free up my stuck joints. Then, I began to work with the personal training team…The results have amazed me. In just a few years, working hard with the Sanctuary Body team, I’ve re-built my body!"

Rolfing™

Rolfing® is a form of bodywork that combines guided movement with hands-on manipulation to gradually release restrictions in the body. The goal of Rolfing® is to help the body reclaim its optimum natural alignment and balance in gravity. It works directly on the soft tissue called fascia that maintains tension throughout the body and creates each individual’s unique shape. Rolfing® has also been successful in reducing chronic muscle strain. Postural problems, injuries, repetitive motions, surgeries and scars, and even everyday physical and psychological stress can tighten muscles, misalign bones and diminish mobility. By lengthening the affected muscles and tissue, Rolfing® focuses on the source of tension. Dr. Ida Rolf, the creator of this work in the 1940’s, found that when restrictions are released, the tissue’s natural elasticity and mobility are restored, bones regain their correct position, and the body is better able to release tension and pain. Clients report greater energy, increased freedom of movement, and an enhanced sense of well-being. Each session begins with an assessment of your body structure and movement. Your Rolfer® will then use their hands and elbows to address various parts of the body while you lay on a massage table, sit on a bench, or stand and move. The feeling can vary greatly from pleasurable to intense, but you should be able to relax into it, rather tightening the body. The classic series consists of ten sessions, ideally no more than 3 weeks apart, with each lasting about 75 minutes. There’s no requirement for a client to commit beyond any one session. However, each session builds upon the last one, and prepares you for the next, while also addressing the body’s immediate needs. You’ll also get an education on movement and posture. Integrating it will be your homework between sessions. New Rolfing clients are currently being seen by certified Rolfer Gabriel Ewing. For inquiries about appointments with Ray Allen, please contact him directly at [email protected].
